DOC: Risk of thrombosis and mortality in ibd
- A retrospective study from 2018 reviewed the risk of thrombosis and mortality in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).
- With a large sample size (1093) of patient diagnosed with either Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis
- IBD patients have higher risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE) due to longer periods of immobilization, obesity, inflammatory illness with internal bleeding, or use of steroids.
- The prevalence of thrombosis in patients with IBD was 5.1% and mortality rate was higher on patients who suffered thrombosis (10.71% vs 1.45%).
- VTE prophylaxis is needed for hospitalized patients with IBD
- However, the current prophylaxis is not enough to avoid VTE
- Patients may develop VTE despite the use of heparin prophylaxis
